Disaster cause devastation for everyone in their path. Especially for families striving to break out of poverty disasters can reverse development advances making it difficult for families and communities to leave poverty behind. Because of the changing global climate, in the last decades disasters such as storms, flooding, and drought are becoming more and more frequent. These events have the greatest effect on the world’s most vulnerable with 90% of all disaster related deaths occurring in poor countries. In order to save lives and see lasting transformation for the most vulnerable, Food for the Hungry has made Disaster Risk Reduction a key element of the work we do as we walk with communities to end poverty.
When I first came to Peru, I worked to help FH Peru start a disaster preparedness project with churches. Since then I have been blessed to use my gifts to serve communities in Peru through a variety of roles. Recently my role has been been to help develop and implement disaster risk reduction programs. In October, I began a new role with Food for the Hungry as the Global Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Coordinator. In this new role, I will have the opportunity to support FH field operations worldwide, assisting other country teams in developing and implementing DRR projects that will help communities prepare for, prevent and reduce the effects of disasters like flooding, drought, storms and earthquakes. In this new role I will continue to support Food for the Hungry Peru with DRR and other special projects.
