Back in August, a team from my home church in Washington, Maple Valley Presbyterian, came to visit Peru. They spent a week of their time serving in one of the communities where FH works in Lima, Nueva Imagen ( New Image). As part of the church's donation to the work of FH, the community was given funds to continue construction of their community meeting center.
Before this new construction, Nueva Imagen had a smaller center built of thin, reclaimed wooden planks. Over the last 10 years, it had become greatly worn out, weakened by termites and age. While the team was there, several sections of the building were being held up with makeshift wooden supports, and holes in the walls were covered with newsprint. Thanks to God's providence and the moving of hearts, the community is now building a larger structure using more permanent materials. This building will be such a huge blessing for the people of Nueva Imagen because the center is an important place for groups to gather for meetings such as FH kids club, training activities with parents, and other community events.
One hope is that FH has is to establish a Ludoteca in the communities where we work. A Ludoteca is a games library where children can play with didactic games in a safe environment - supervised by mother volunteers who have been trained by FH. When their new community center is complete, the people of Nueva Imagen will have a versatile and safe space for children to gather.
